Odontotherapy is the branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of tooth decay.

Tooth decay is the incipient damage to tooth structures. It can be caused by poor nutrition, poor hygiene, embryonic developmental disorders, drug treatments, dental and maxillary disorders, dental appliances, cosmetic devices (piercings) as well as vicious habits.

Depending on the development, they may be superficial, medium and deep and may extend over one or more surfaces of the tooth, these criteria being used in specialist classification. Untreated in time, they can lead to pulp damage and perhaps even tooth loss. Treatment can range from minimally invasive in the early stages to laborious conservation methods. A variety of materials can be used to treat tooth decay, ranging from glass ionomer to state-of-the-art composite materials.

Increasingly, laser technology is being adapted and is intended to replace traditional burrs useful in cleaning and treating cavities.

Chemicals, varnishes and topical applications of various chemical compounds can also be used preventively.

Patients need to understand that prevention is much more important than treatment, which is why regular specialist check-ups lead to the avoidance of interventions on dental structures.

There are obvious cavity lesions, but there may be some lesions that are not visible to the naked eye, such as interdental lesions.
